Let’s Get One Thing Straight

Yesterday I was talking to my friend Nicola. I was about to tell her the little cockroach story below, and then I realized, wait, no, I can just make her go read it online and save myself the effort. I did just that, and left the room. When I saw her again later, she asked what the point was.

What’s the point? What’s the point? Ok, apparently we need to explain this blog thing a little.

I’m Jason. That’s Dan, over there. We, like Frog and Toad, are friends. We share the doombot.com domain with Kai and Tony, who are also our friends. Maybe they will come post here sometime too.

We felt like doing some sort of creative project, but we can’t seem to commit to anything or finish anything. All our ideas are way too vast in scope. Our most successful to date was Comics Ex Machina, a web comic. When I say “successful” I only mean in terms of longevity and commitment — I will not speak for the quality of those comic strips (though there’s some good computer effects not made by me). Now we keep talking about other stuff we could do, but we can’t come up with anything that is either small enough in scope, interesting enough that we’d want to keep doing it over an extended period of time, and/or relevant enough that anyone else will care about it but us. The logical conclusion seemed to be that we should do something that had no defined scope, that could be abandoned whenever we feel like it, and that wouldn’t concern itself with relevance or what have you.

So let’s get one thing straight here: this is just a blog, so there is no point. If you’re reading this right now, it probably means you know one or more of us personally. When we get an idea for a project that has a point, rest assured that you’ll be the first to know. In the meantime, we just feel the need to put our silly conversations, observations, and ruminations out for anyone to see. We’ll try to avoid making this a boring blog (we don’t feel like updating every time we make ourselves a sandwich or buy new socks any more than you feel like reading about that). Nevertheless, sorry if you came here looking for something with a point. Try a smart web comic or something instead. Or go play outside.

There, now it’s almost 6:30; I managed to avoid doing my homework for at least a good 20 minutes right there.
