[...] doombot » Blogging the Trilogy: The Empire Strikes Back via DF: If it were only that the prequels were ruined by subpar writing, I would be okay. Disappointed, but hardly inconsolable. Maybe Lucas had just caught lightning in a bottle with the originals. But unfortunately, the nature of the prequels seems to spoil the originals merely by occupying shelf space near them, via some sort of heinous osmosis. Now, if you watch the prequels before the original trilogy (in chronological order), the ending of Empire is completely without weight. The biggest reveal in the history of cinema is ruined. Sure, there’s the dramatic irony of watching Episode IV and V knowing Luke and Leia are siblings and Vader is their father, but it’s not played for dramatic irony; for that you need suspense, and the climax of Empire is dependent on surprise, not suspense. It is the reason I will ensure that my children not watch the prequels until they’ve seen the original trilogy (in whatever form it exists by that point). (tagged: starwars ) [...]

a lot of debate has gone into the best order to show all 6 movies to someone who hasn't seen any of them. i wish i could remember where i read this, but here's my take: IV, V, I, II, III, VI
this way you get the impact of A New Hope, followed by the cliffhangers and revalations in Empire. then you go to the prequels for a flashback, finally wrapping everything up with Jedi.

Great stuff... but when will you post your thoughts on Jedi? It's been almost 5 years; even Jedi followed quicker on Empire's heels!

And yes, of course, when he's old enough, my (now 3-week-old) boy will watch all six films in the order God intended, and he will call Star Wars "Star Wars", NOT "Episode IV" or "A New Hope". Similarly, he will read the Chronicles of Narnia starting with "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe", and "The Magician's Nephew" will remain right where it should: as Book Six.

"Tonal consistence is something I often go on about at length, especially when it comes to movies. It means, to my mind, that nothing in the movie feels out of place; characters behave as expected; there are no major plot holes; there’s nothing that brings you out of the experience to remind you that you’re watching a movie."

I agree completely, and yet this is the one reason I don't care for "Empire". I just can't get past "omg there's a muppet in star wars". That and the giant time-warp that Luke apparently steps into to get years of Jedi training in the time that Han doesn't even change clothes.

Having read the Leigh Brackett first draft, I can say that she added NONE of the sparkling dialog we've come to know and love in "Empire". In fact, the remains of her dialog are essentially "Ben... Ben..." and some toss-off procedural line.

Not to take away from Brackett's memory, but Kasdan wrote the good stuff.
