That’s quite a sale

I’m reading Bill Bryson’s Bryson’s Dictionary of Troublesome Words right now; it’s a catalog of frequently misused or misspelled words, with a particular eye towards journalism. The entry on “men’s, women’s” immediately popped to mind when I got this email notification from Macy’s. Bryson condemns the use of “Mens” and “Womens” as “subliterate” as well as the somewhat less common “Mens’” and “Womens.’” The email notification Macy’s sent me for their sale would seem to err in the other direction entirely.

Macys Sale

Up to 50% off women? Pretty good deal; they can get pricey.

That of course id only off the woman, not the wining, dining, vacations, flowers, chocolates, and probably the eventually fancy jewelry. I’d hold out for at least a 75% off sale.
