Short Game Review: Splinter Cell Double Agent (Xbox 360)
This is one of the most creative and most buggy games I have ever played. They’ve ditched medkits and heath meters in favor of two “trust” meters—doing stuff slightly beyond the call of duty for terrorists makes them trust you, but makes the NSA wonder if they can trust you. Disobeying particularly evil orders reassures the NSA, but makes the terrorists wonder if you’re a double agent (which you are, hence the title). This, of course, leads to some really interesting moral quandaries (or at least it would if, like most gamers, I didn’t just save and then reload from that every time something goes wrong). Too bad the game frequently froze up and occasionally forced me to reboot when my character got stuck on furniture. It kind of kills the sense of narrative when this dude who can defuse bombs, hack computers, and silently assassinate a building full of people can’t extricate himself from between the couch and the coffee table.

The “trust” system where you balance the NSA’s interests with those of the terrorist group you are infiltrating seemed neat, but the “errand” missions you would do around the terrorist HQ were somewhat dull and frustrating.
