Short Game Review: Mass Effect (replay)
As I did with Bioshock, so I shall do with Mass Effect—and in this case, the follow-up review feels even more deserved. Whereas Bioshock only gave two endings, you could play Mass Effect several times and get a different experience each time through thanks to all the conversation options they recorded. Moreover, my replay was even more enjoyable thanks to actually learning how to play. My advice to first-time players: Read the instructions, despite minor (admittedly not really surprising) spoilers, so you learn things like how your vehicle has two weapons. Also, start with a custom class, as having some kind of super power besides “shoots even better” makes the game a lot more fun. (I got really good at positioning myself such that I could telekinetically throw bad guys off bridges and cliffs.) And finally, between missions, equip your best gear, and then sell everything else so you can buy even better stuff, then equip that. Having a swimming pool of money makes the game way more manageable, even on “Insane” difficulty. (And check out the comments on the previous review for notes on the downloadable content.)
